Glossary of Terms

Here is a common terms and lingo used in the SEO world, kindly refer to the list to better understand every definition.


Algorithm

An algorithm is an effective method for solving a problem using a finite sequence of instructions. Algorithms are used for calculation, data processing, and many other fields.

Article Marketing

Is a type of advertising in which businesses write short articles related to their respective industry. These articles are made available for distribution and publication in the marketplace. Each article contains a bio box and byline that include references and contact information for the author's business. Well-written content articles released for free distribution have the potential of increasing the authoring business' credibility within its market as well as attracting new clients.

Backlinks

Links that are originating from one website and pointing to another website or web page.

Black Hat SEO

Also called spamdexing, attempt to redirect search results to particular target pages in a fashion that is against the search engines' terms of service (guidelines), whereas white hat methods are generally approved by the search engines. Some of the blackhat SEO tactics include: keyword stuffing, hidden text and links, doorway and cloaked pages, link farming and blog comment spam.

Bloging

Is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

Benchmark

Is the act of running a computer program, a set of programs, or other operations, in order to assess the relative performance of an object, normally by running a number of standard tests and trials against it. The term 'benchmark' is also mostly utilized for the purposes of elaborately-designed benchmarking programs themselves.

Cloaking

Is a black hat search engine optimization (SEO) technique in which the content presented to the search engine spider is different to that presented to the user's browser.

Content Management System (CMS)

Is a computer application used to manage work flow needed to collaboratively create, edit, review, index, search, publish and archive various kinds of digital media and electronic text.

Contextual Advertising

Is a form of targeted advertising for advertisements appearing on websites or other media, such as content displayed in mobile browsers. The advertisements themselves are selected and served by automated systems based on the content displayed to the user.

Conversion

A conversion occurs when a prospective customer takes the marketer's intended action. If the prospect has visited a marketer's web site, the conversion action might be making an online purchase, or submitting a form to request additional information.

Copywriting

Is the use of words to promote a person, business, opinion or idea. Although the word copy may be applied to any content intended for printing (as in the body of a newspaper article or book), the term copywriter is generally limited to such promotional situations, regardless of media (as advertisements for print, television, radio or other media). The author of newspaper or magazine copy, for example, is generally called a reporter or writer, not a copywriter.

Domain name

Is an alpha numeric series of strings that are separated by periods, it identifies the computer address of a network connection and defines the autonomy, control and authority over it.

Doorway Pages

Are web pages that are created for spamdexing, this is, for spamming the index of a search engine by inserting results for particular phrases with the purpose of sending visitors to a different page.

Email Marketing

Is a form of direct web marketing which uses electronic mail as a means of communicating commercial or fundraising messages to an audience.

Google Adsense

Is an ad serving application run by Google Inc. Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image, and more recently, video advertisements on their websites. These advertisements are administered by Google and generate revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis. Google beta tested a cost-per-action service, but discontinued it in October 2008 in favor of a DoubleClick offering (also owned by Google).

HTML

An acronym for HyperText Markup Language, is the predominant markup language for web pages. It provides a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document—by denoting certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, etc.—and to supplement that text with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects.

Hyperlink

Is a reference in a document to an external or internal piece of information. The most common usage is in the Internet to browse through web pages.

Interactive Advertising

Is the use of online or offline interactive media to communicate with consumers and to promote products, brands, services, and public service announcements, corporate or political groups.

Internet Marketing

Also referred to as i-marketing, web marketing, online marketing, or eMarketing, is the marketing of products or services over the Internet.

Keyword Research

Is a practice used by search engine optimization professionals to find and research actual search terms people enter into the search engines when conducting a search.

Lead Generation

Is a marketing term that refers to the creation or generation of prospective consumer interest or inquiry into a business' products or services. Leads can be generated for a variety of purposes - list building, e-newsletter list acquisition or for winning customers. A lead is a sign-up for an advertiser offer that includes contact information and in some cases, demographic information. There are two types of leads in the lead generation market: sales leads and marketing leads.

Organic search

Are search engine results that are return due to the relevance to the specific search term.

Pay per click

Pay per click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model used on websites, in which advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system.

Podcasting

Is a series of digital media files, usually digital audio or video, that is made available for download via web syndication. The syndication aspect of the delivery is what differentiates podcasts from other files that are accessed by simple download or by streaming: it means that special client software applications known as podcatchers (such as Apple Inc.'s iTunes or Nullsoft's Winamp) can automatically identify and retrieve new files when they are made available, by accessing a centrally-maintained web feed that lists all files associated with a particular podcast.

Programming

Iis the process of writing, testing, debugging/troubleshooting, and maintaining the source code of computer programs. This source code is written in a form relationships for personal and business.

Really Simple Syndication (RSS)

Often times also called "Rich Site Summary", is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries, news headlines, audio, and video—in a standardized format. An RSS document (which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel") includes full or summarized text, plus metadata such as publishing dates and authorship.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

Is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

Search engine results page

Is the listing of web pages returned by a search engine in response to a keyword query. The results normally include a list of web pages with titles, a link to the page, and a short description showing where the keywords have matched content within the page.

Search engine marketing

Or SEM, is a form of web marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.

Social Media

Is information content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies. At its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. It's a fusion of sociology and technology, transforming monologue (one to many) into dialog (many to many) and is the democratization of information, transforming people from content readers into publishers. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and business.

Social bookmarking

Is a method for Internet users to store, organize, search, and manage bookmarks of web pages on the Internet with the help of metadata, typically in the form of tags that collectively and/or collaboratively become a folksonomy.

Uniform Resource Locator (URL)

Is a type of Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that specifies where an identified resource is available and the mechanism for retrieving it.

Video Marketing

Is a common web marketing tool used by most web companies, the goal of this is to express and communicate their brand widely and effectively in the shortest time possible. Most web companies create their own videos which is mostly uploaded from video sharing sites online such as Youtube.

Viral Marketing

May also refer to viral marketing and viral advertising, this are marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives, Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or even text messages. The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable.

Web 2.0

Refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that facilitates communication, secure information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities, hosted services, and applications; such as social-networking sites, video-sharing sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies.

Web Analytics

Is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage.

Web Application

Is an application that is accessed via web browser over a network such as the Internet or an intranet. It is also a computer software application that is coded in a browser-supported language (such as HTML, JavaScript, Java, etc.) and reliant on a common web browser to render the application executable.

Web Browser

Is a software application which enables a user to display and interact with text, images, videos, music, games and other information typically located on a Web page at a Web site on the World Wide Web or a local area network.

Web Crawler

Is a computer program that browses the World Wide Web in a methodical, automated manner.

This process is called Web crawling or spidering. Many sites, in particular search engines, use spidering as a means of providing up-to-date data. Web crawlers are mainly used to create a copy of all the visited pages for later processing by a search engine that will index the downloaded pages to provide fast searches.

Web Design

Is the skill of designing presentations of content (usually hypertext or hypermedia) that is delivered to an end-user through the World Wide Web, by way of a Web browser or other Web-enabled software.

Web Directory

Also refers to a link directory, is a repository on the World Wide Web, It specializes in linking to other web sites and categorizing those links.

Webmaster

The web architect, the web developer, the site author, the website administrator, or (informally) the webmeister, is the person responsible for designing, developing, marketing, or maintaining a website.

Web Sites

Is a collection of related web pages, images, videos or other digital assets that are hosted on one web server, usually accessible via the Internet.

A web page is a document, typically written in (X)HTML, that is almost always accessible via HTTP, a protocol that transfers information from the web server to display in the user's web browser.

White Hat SEO

Refers to following the standards of SEO terms and condition, white hat can also be attributed as a hero or a good guy.

World Wide Web

Is a very large set of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet. With a Web browser, one can view Web pages that may contain text, images, videos, and other multimedia and navigate between them using hyperlinks.
